Aperson enters into communication relationships because he wants to relate to theenvironment, especially the human environment, around him. As Sapir wrote in thepassage we quoted earlier, society is a network of such relationships maintained chiefly bycommunication. To an observer communication seems to flow through the social systemlike blood through the individual cardiovascular system, serving the whole organism,concentrating now on one part, now on another according to need, maintaining contact andbalance and health.
